In 1887, a joint stock company was formed for the construction of a flax mill. Shares were purchased at $25.00 each within the first few months. My Great Grampa, John Cameron, Sr., was one of three managers. The company didn't do very well, I'm afraid, as a co-op; so my Great Uncle, William Cameron, purchased the mill and land and reorganized it. The Cameron Bros. were quite successful and ran the mill until 1904 when the flax boom was over. During the flax pulling season, migrant farmers, referred to as Gypsies, would camp out the near the mill at the Crooked Bridge at Tyermans. They were a happy lot and were always seen gathering wild flowers that grew near the mill. Reading this story about my family's enterprise helped me put together this quilt I call Ring Around the Posies.
