One of the greatest joys in our lives is our family. Whether you are from a large family or, like me, have only one sister, there are still fun things that happen. When we grew up and had our own families, there were similarities that turned out to be funny... we both married men from Ohio, and we both had two sons. But we were different as night and day in just about every other aspect of our lives. I'm sure you'll hear a few stories down the road, but today I want to tell you the story of how Sharron became the Buckeye Queen—and I'm not talking about Ohio.
Sharron started out making a large container of buckeyes for my husband for Christmas... you know, those fun peanut butter balls half dipped in chocolate?! Yum! He was the only one who ever got any, and he wasn't sharing them with any of us. Our two sons would sneak into the container and eat some, then blame the dwindling number on each other. This caused my husband to start hiding them. This went on for a couple of years until finally everyone started bugging her to make more and accusing her of playing favorites.
After that, she made smaller containers for each of her sons, then each of our sons, and so on, until it got to be quite an ordeal and she had to have help making them. Each year she went to a lot of trouble to find just the right container for each person. This went on for years. The last year she made them, she said... “That’s it! No more buckeyes.” She was retiring from the job. I haven't heard one person say they would take over that tradition.
