Boogey Bears

When my Mom, Edna, was old enough to help out, she worked at my great Uncle Tom's farm. She would help out during the week then go home on the weekends. So, on a Friday evening, my uncles would pick her up and they would all go to a barn dance. After the dance she would go home with them. My uncles always seemed to be in a hurry to get there, probably because they were courting someone. so they arranged to pick her up at the hard road with the horse and buggy. My mother's cousin, .Jean, didn't want my mom to have to walk down the lane by herself, so, this old man, Duncan, that worked on the farm as well; would escort her to the hard road to meet my uncles. Now, Duncan was quite a character. He was quite scruffy, had a full beard. no teeth and almost always had a wad of chewing tobacco in his mouth. He would take her by the elbow and say "Watch out Eshla! There might be a bear in the booshes!" When Mom tells this story she always adds that she would have preferred coming across that bear than be with Duncan. Since he was no doubt trying to scare her, this BOOGEY BEARS quilt was born.
